Analysis Of Dana Boyd's 'Wikipedia As A Source Of Knowledge Production'
Boyd's argument is in support of Wikipedia's value as a source of knowledge production as opposed to popular views on Wikipedia as a site with inaccuracies and misleading information because anyone can edit it. She talked about the value of Wikipedia to teens who feel it makes their search faster and easier.
She established her ethos by providing her audience with a variety of examples to support her claim. To establish her claim that Wikipedia is a site of knowledge production, she included various testimonies from students who were told by their teachers not to use Wikipedia as evident in the testimonies of white fifteen year old Kat in Massachusetts and Brooke, a white fifteen year old from Nebraska.
She demonstrated her knowledge of the subject matter by giving a researched account of how the content of Wikipedia changes over time as users introduce new knowledge and also how she learnt from different viewpoints surrounding the American revolution through Wikipedia discussion page.
Boyd demonstrated character by using her personal experience by giving a testimony using her own family and she equally provided her audience with a plethora of examples.
In demonstrating goodwill, Boyd's argument allows the readers to comprehend and acknowledge that technology has created a major shift in today's modern society, but the youth need to properly use technology to identify useful websites.
Her argument stated that Wikipedia is not the best information but it satisfies the reader to find what they need. I think Dana Boyd is credible because her argument is not vague and it is comprehensible. The personal testimony she added makes it more compelling. And the fact that she tried to bring out both sides of the argument and still maintained her main idea makes her credible to me.
