ANALYSIS OF JOAN DIDION's "GOOD BYE TO ALL THAT" AS A GOOD MEMOIR
"Good bye to all that" tells a perfect story about a young lady and her experience in New York. The story was told in a clear language and Didion didn't confuse the reader in the process of writing this memoir.
Since a good memoir ought to treat the interrelationship of events, in "good bye to all that" Didion felt like everything she was being told had been said to her before. And also the happenings around her still looked the same. It appeared like nothing changed.
The beautiful imagery of New York she painted beautified the narrative. Also, she was able to describe the humans and events in her memoir in such a wonderful way. Ranging from sea cooks working in clean kitchens, women lighting candles, etc. One could vividly imagine it in their mind.
On the significance of the story, it has a nostalgic tone around it. Didion longed for home and that familiar surrounding that New York city provided. She couldn't get all that feeling in Los Angeles. The memoir also reveals that as one grows older, the need to relocate will set in and that inevitable change will follow afterwards no matter how little.
Just like White's "once more to the lake" , "Good bye to all that" by Joan Didion has the same nostalgic tone. They both talked about what they needed to return back to. And they both talked about a deeper meaning to life.
