NANS Calls For Affordable Education At All Levels

NATIONAL Association of Nigerian
Students, NANS, has called for
qualitative and affordable education
at all levels to equip youths and
children for a highly technological
world ahead.
NANS National Public Relations
Officer, PRO, Comrade Bestman
Okereafor, made the call in a statement
to commemorate the 78th International
Students’ Day on Saturday in Enugu.
Okereafor also urged government
at all levels to prioritize education by
improving the sector.
He noted that it is regrettable
that the education sector received a
lesser percentage of the 2018 budget
considering the challenges facing the
sector.
According to him, “the federal
government should find lasting
solutions to the incessant strike actions
being embarked upon by academic
and non-academic staff unions of
schools which is usually caused by
non-payment of staff entitlements.
“The leadership of over 43.2 million
Nigerian students both home and in
the Diaspora under the auspices of
NANS led by Comrade Aruna Kadiri
has joined students all over the world
to celebrate this year’s International
Students’ Day.
“NANS is however appreciative of
the National Assembly for passing the
Students’ Financial Aid Scheme Bill.
“We salute Senator Hamma Misau
for sponsoring this students’ oriented
bill. The bill seeks to offer loans to
eligible Nigerian students in higher
institutions of learning.
“NANS is conclusively calling
on security agents to desist from
brutalising our compatriots during
peaceful and genuine non-political
protests.
“It should be remembered that we
have our constitutional rights to protest
against any inimical or anti-students
oriented policies from government or
from school management,’’ he said.
Okereafor, however, implored
students to be law abiding, peaceful
and non-violent at all times especially
during protests.
“NANS is wishing all Nigerian
students at home and in the Diaspora
a happy International Students’ Day,’’
he added.
The International Students’ Day
is an international observance of the
student community held annually on
November 17.
