Life Of Ekene Episode 3
By Ahmed Abdulkabir

The trees outside the morgue were blowing furiously and singing aggressively like something pissed them off. The sounds they were making seemed like a burial song in Ekene's village. At least that was what he thought they sounded like.
Ekene tried to muster courage by moving to the window to see what was happening outside. As he carefully peeped out of the window, he saw the reason for all of nature's revolt. The sky was heavy, pitch black and it was already drizzling outside. Having known this, Ekene heaved a sigh of relief and returned to his duty post.
His mind embarked on a far distant journey to a far distant land where he was a king and had beautiful female servants who were all walking around naked in his palace. That reminded him of a popular Eddy Murphy movie where a female servant said "the royal pennis is clean your Highness". He smiled to himself and held his crotch. " I must blow! " he said to himself.
His mind strayed away for thirty minutes until he started sweating profusely. The room suddenly felt as hot as a bakery. He wiped the sweat off his face severally before it dawned on him that the masters of power had done their job. "Oh no! NEPA again!" said Ekene. He searched for his torchlight and returned to his duty post. Minutes later, he started hearing sound of human feet. "Who's there? " Ekene asked. The sound didn't stop, this time, it was like the owners of the feet were playing hide and seek outside. The sound continued and it was like it was coming towards Ekene. "I have a gun and I won't hesitate to shoot" Ekene said, petrified.
The sound became very close to the room that served as Ekene's duty post. The human feet stopped in front of Ekene's door and silence followed. Ekene couldn't hold his fear. His torchlight dropped from his shivering hands, his feet became sweaty and he didn't know when he started peeing in his pants. Everywhere became as cold as death, silent and unusual. Ekene could hear his heart beating fast.
Ekene could hear every sound outside clearly; the owls hooting, the cockroaches in the Morgue's toilet going about their business, even the busy ants in the gigantic anthill outside. As Ekene sat quietly waiting for what would happen next, something walked in roof. Ekene tried to convince himself that there was nothing other than rodents on the roof. "I'm not running mad, am I?" He waited for a response from an unknown figure but none came. Back to his problem! Ekene started praying fervently like he had never done before. The way he was going about it, he could pass for an ordained man of God.
Someone started knocking on the door. It started gradually till it became increasingly annoying. Ekene kept quiet and didn't move an inch from where he was sitting, covered with urine. The door opened, but there was nobody there. Ekene couldn't hold his fear anymore, he ran out of the morgue. He left all his belongings, aside the new uniform he was adorned with.
As he was running, he bumped into a vigilante leader who mistook him for a thief. "Where you dey come from by this time of the night?" Asked the vigilante chief impatiently. He didn't wait for Ekene's reply before he blew his whistle. Other vigilante members came out of the bush. From the countenance on the face of the vigilante leader, it was obvious that Ekene was going to collect the beating of his life whether he was guilty or innocent. Ekene tried explaining everything that happened in the morgue to them, but they were not ready to listen.
Prior to this day, they have been accused of incompetence by the town people. Ever since they were employed, they have not caught a single theif and yet, there were still robbery cases in the neighborhood. Ekene was going to be their scapegoat. He is going to take the fall for all the transgressions of the real night walkers. "I swear, I am innocent Sir" Ekene tried to convince them. One of the vigilantes kicked him in the stomach and within seconds, the rest pounced on him while the vigilante chief watched, smoking his cigarette.
Around 6:45 A.M, it was Ekene's wailing that woke the entire neighborhood. Everybody gathered and some were agitating for Ekene's execution on the spot. One fat man from the crowd took an old tyre and hung it on Ekene's neck and he quickly added a motorcycle tyre to decorate Ekene for the occasion. Ekene was looking like a traditional ruler in a preparatory ritual to ascend the throne. The fat man shouted "Bring the petrol, let's burn the criminal!".
